The Power of Few

Scripture

Mark 2:1-5

1And again He entered Capuernaum after some days, and it was heard that He was in the house. 2Immediately many gathered together, so that there was no longer room to receive them, not even near the door. And He preached the word to them. 3Then they came to Him, bringing a paralytic who was carried by four men. 4And when they could not come near Him because of the crowd, they uncovered the room where He was. So when they had broken through, they let down the bed on which the paralytic was lying. 5When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven you.”

Main Idea

There is something about being connected to the right people. In Genesis, God says it’s not good for us to be alone. This isn’t a marriage scripture, but a life scripture. We need people in our lives—we need community, family, friendships, companionship. You can’t do what God has called you to do by yourself.

In this week’s sermon, learn about the power those closest to us have, and the importance of forming relationships with a few of the right kind of friends.

“There’s an exponential blessing in a few. That’s why you need a few people who can encourage you...who know what you’re going through.”

Discussion Questions

  1. This week's sermon outlined the importance of having a few friends in your life. What is one of the reasons we need a few close friends? Why did this point resonate with you?
  2. Has there been a time in your life when you've needed to rely on the strength or counsel of others? Is there a time when you've helped carry someone else?
  3. How do you invest in your friendships? How are you helping your friends grow closer to God?

Summary

  1. I need a few friends who will bring me closer to Jesus. The people closest to you are determining your destiny, direction, and destination in life. There are no neutral relationships: people are either bringing you closer to Jesus or taking you farther from Jesus. Do not be misled: bad company corrupts good character. (1 Corinthians 15:33 NIV)
  2. I need a few friends who can carry me. We all need help eventually. There’s going to come a time when you need to borrow someone’s courage, faith, strength, help, counsel, perspective, or wisdom. Being “carried” means relying on someone else’s ability or guidance. There are times when we can’t count on ourselves, we need to be able to count on others. There is safety when you have multiple trusted people telling you the same thing. (Proverbs 11:14 NKJV)
  3. I need a few friends for breakthrough. We need a few friends who will pray for us and speak the word of God for us when we can’t think straight. We need friends who can challenge us and correct us and uncover what’s possible in our lives. We need people who can help us see and know our blind spots. It can be painful trying to breakthrough or get to the next level. Proverbs 27:17 says: As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.
  4. I need a few friends to heal what’s on the inside. A lot of the time, we’re carrying things that have never been healed, and we need friends to help get us to Jesus for healing. It’s important to form the right friendships. It shouldn’t be about convenience and availability—that’s how we choose the wrong relationships. Forming relationships with the right people will often require effort and commitment. How do you choose the right friends? Run as hard as you can at Jesus, then look to your right and left. The people who are keeping up are likely the right friends.
  5. I don’t need more friends, I just need the right friends. All I need are a few friends—those who will help me get closer to Jesus. (Proverbs 18:24 AMP) Jesus is the friend who sticks closer than a brother.
