Do You Love Me?

Scripture

John 3:16 NIV

16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Main Idea

God's gift to us in Jesus is extraordinary. Just as we appreciate great gifts in our lives, we must recognize the greatness of the gift God has bestowed upon us. While we may not reject a good gift, we may sometimes struggle to accept a gift that surpasses all expectations. It is in these moments that we may question, "God, do You truly love me?" Throughout Scripture, the question "Do you love me?" is asked three times. Interestingly, it is not posed by an individual but by Jesus Himself. He asked this question not out of doubt or curiosity but as an opportunity to restore and affirm His love for His disciple, Peter. Peter had failed and denied Jesus, but Jesus wanted to assure him of His unfailing love and restore their relationship.

Many of us have firm confidence that God loves the world but question whether God loves us personally.

Discussion Questions

  1. How do you define love? How does your definition differ from God's definition of love?
  2. Do you feel worthy of God's love? Why or why not?
  3. We resist God's love for three reasons: we haven't received Hs forgiveness; we haven't accepted His approval? and, we haven't acknowledged His value of us? Which of these reasons for resisting God's love resonates the most with you and why?

Summary

If we ever harbor any doubts about God's love for us it's critical that we do these three things.

Receive His forgiveness.

Accept His approval.

Acknowledge His value of us.

God doesn't love us because of what we have done. He knows the scars. He knows the secrets. He loves us with an unconditional and immeasurable love. You are the one Jesus loves.
